About the programme
Arnold Schoenberg and Franz Schmidt. They were born in the same year and played quartets together in Vienna. One was a giant of 20th century music, who had to emigrate and earn his living by giving private lessons until the end of his life. The other was the Principal of the Vienna Musikhochschule, courted by the Nazi regime as the greatest living Austrian composer, and now almost forgotten in the footnotes of music history. In their organ works, the Jewish exponent of the Viennese School and the Catholic late Romantic meet.
